Defibrillators in Marazion
In Europe, around one person in 1,000 suffers cardiac arrest each year. In the UK, there are approximately 60,000 cardiac arrests annually. Resuscitation is attempted in only about half of these, but fewer than one in 10 survive.
According to recommended standards from the Resuscitation Council UK, to make sure that people stand the best chance of restarting a stopped heart, defibrillators should be within 200 metres or a two minute walk of where it is needed. Marazion has seven potentially life saving devices to complete this ‘arc of protection’ ensuring it is the first town in the country that meets this guideline.
A person’s chance of survival decreases by around 10 per cent with every minute that defibrillation is delayed. Only rarely is the ambulance service able to attend and provide defibrillation early enough, and the best way of ensuring prompt defibrillation is for someone nearby to use an AED to deliver the shock that may save a life.
The town council has spent the last year working with the local school, health services, local businesses and Mr Paul Williams from The Ronnie Richards Memorial Charity in order to deliver the plan to meet the recommended defib guidelines.
